You actually don't need to go to school for it. You don't need to be licensed at all. However, school is a good place to start. From personal experience I would say you should look into a middle range school in terms of price. Don't go to the most expensive place in case you decide you don't like it & don't go to the cheapest place because chances are it won't be very good. You can always get more training if you need it.

Your other option is finding an artist in your area who's willing to teach you the ropes in hopes of eventually hiring you or recommending you for jobs when he or she isn't available. Or just start sending out resumes. You may need to do some freebies in the beginning but don't do them forever. Put a value on your work because no one else will do it for you & some people view free work as not so good work.

Try to do some trade-for-prints shoots with photographers & models in your area. Meaning, no one gets paid, you're all doing it for your book. Put an ad on Craigslist to get in touch with people.

Go to a department store and get a job in the cosmetics department. They'll send you to makeup training too.
