For example: The Canon PIXMA iP4200 Photo Printer...can it print out an essay? or only photos??

Can do both. If you want to print photos use photo quality paper, if not just use standard grade paper. You pay a lot more for the photo paper. Also, if the printer is being promoted as a photo printer it has probably been calibrated to print at a higher dpi to give better looking photos. Something else to consider, if you are wanting to print photos try to use the printer manufacturers brand of paper, they set their printers to suit their paper, hence better looking photos.

I have a "photo printer" and it prints regular pages and excellent photos. It just means that it will print higher quality photos than a regular inkjet.

Photo printers are printers with enhanced quality for photo printing, f corse you can print your essay, all it means is that the printer has enhanced quality.

Yes your printer can print documents. "Photo printer" denotes that your printer is primarily for photos.
