Did it happen only lately? Mine this few month also very slow. Well my pc just a PIII that why it is slow. no point to add more hardware, it will be the same. Are you still running on win 98? That may part of the fault. I think microsoft now try to change to IE7.

Bugs, viruses, spyware, too much information on the hard drive.
Get yourself a PC cleaning software, and free-up the hard drive. There are a number of program software packages outthere to do this find a good one and put it to work.

well i guess it depends upon the model of your pc...maybe the frequncy speed of it is very slow compared to others. The slower the speed, the smaller or fewer instructions it receives and process.

Well, it has nothing to do with DirectX. That's something windows games use.
First thing I'd check for is a browser hijack. This is a great little program:
