Like what happened to the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Say you worked for the government as a astronomer. Only you and some select government officials know this information. Would you go public with it? Some would argue it would plunge the world into utter violence and chaos.

Also, do you think it would be wise to conceal it from the public at large for the sake of order?

I would go public with it, so I could show the facts and urge people to fund a "star wars" type program to try to shoot the asteroid out of our path. Or at least do the above in government secretly but do something!!!

If it was being kept secret by some select government officials then yes I would go public. Lets put the whole scientific community on this problem and get some solutions. What was the old saying "Necessity is the mother of invention" and I would have to say that would be a powerful necessity so why not put the whole world brain trust on that problem, and 5 years is not a long time.
I am not a big believer in keeping the sheep ignorant, especially when it is the government keeping the secret.

I would probably keep quiet for a few years to see what the government would do. But eventually I would say something, if no one else would.

If I only had a certain amount of time left in my life it should be my right to know whether the results would be good or bad.

I don't really believe it would send the world into chaos to know that. Likely, they'd figure it was another big, dumb scare like Y2K. Everyone KNEW that was coming.

Look at this way. North Korea's Ping Yong iL.. whatever his name is... has said he envisions the U.S. in a sea of fire... he has threatened to nuke us and continues to flex his new nukie muscles at us.

And we ALL know about it. The world is not in chaos. I think we all just continue on our way, and when the world comes crashing to an end, well then, so be it. Meanwhile, while the world's not ending, we've got bills to pay and birthday gifts to buy...

Sure, I'd tell everyone... I'd also add to my message of doom, "Of course, y'know, I could be wrong... "

I think I would go public with it, because humans have a way of finding ways to survive. The more people who know about the situation the more people you have brainstorming for survival. By telling you could ultimately save the planet, because someone outside of the initial group might have a solution no one has thought of.
