I have 845GV motherboard with 2.4 Ghz Pentium, and a 400 WATT smps. Attached two hard disks each of 80 GB baracauda 7200 rpm. I have windows xp pro in both. Booting occurs from the Primary Master drive, as usual.

It worked fine for 4 months and now lately one hard disk as failed to respond. BIOS detects two hard disks, but "My computer" shows only ONE.

What could be the problem according to you ?

What to do now to get it work again ?

Try booting from a hard disk utility CD -- I know that Western Digital and Maxtor have "setup" CD's that come with their drives. Diagnose the drive in question from the utility CD. One possibility is that (for whatever reason) the drive is no longer being read by Windows as formatted. I guess the solution is to reformat the drive, but I would try installing it in another PC first to see if the problem is consistent (plus it will give you a chance to backup files.)

BIOS detects the physical presence of a hard disk NOT whether it works or not, when post runs you normally get a brief list of the hardware it finds - if you can see this then hit the pause key and see if the 2nd hard disk is listed, press any key to continue.
You may need to slow your pc down in bios to see this.

If track 0 is damaged, then the disk will appear in BIOS but not readable in the OS.

Also make sure that the Master - Slave link hasn't dropped off, if that happens then only one disk will be seen by the OS

Reinstall windows. Most likely its an OS problem. You could try moving both HD's to another computer (motherboard) and see if there is a problem with the MB. Check cables too.

Could be a number of things: perhaps the drive failed, it could have been repartitioned, don't really know. Maybe you can try swapping them if the second one is bootable.
You might also want to go to the device manager for a bit more information.

It sounds the drive is going bad, you can un install the good one and make the other as master and try to boot it up see what will happen. but I still say it is going bad.

If your computer is not working properly when it is switched on, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
