I think it's for spotting on the football field and for a better looking uniform. If a wide receiver has a double digit, the QB knows exactly who he's throwing the ball to. QBs are usually smaller than the other players so if they wore a double digit, it would look kind of oversized. It makes for better sales in the retail stores too.

Yes. Positions are identified by corresponding numbers. In the NFL, the numbers are as follows: 1-19 are for QB, K, P, and WR. 20-49 are for RB, FB and DB. 50-59 are for C, and LB. 60-69 are for OG and NT. 70-79 are for OT and DT. 80-99 are for TE, DE, and WR. The reason that WR is included in two groups is that teams have a tendency to carry more WR'S than any other position on their roster, which allows teams who've retired several jerseys to honor past players to ensure they have enough active numbers to go around and etc.

In high school and college, it's a bit more simple: 1-49 are QB, RB, FB, LB, DB. 50-79 are OL, DL. 80-99 are WR, TE, and DE. K and P can wear pretty much what they want, especially if they play another position.

I think that they some relevance in the order in which they were drafted, quarterbacks get chosen first, runningbacks next, halfbacks and those who double as defensive tackles generally have numbers between 30 and 40, linemen and special teams inbetween 50 and 70, wide recievers are picked last because seemingly the extra runningbacks can also play as wide recievers
