Kids these days love cheap cell imitations that play music when or say something when buttons are pressed. You can also consider buying the child a number of different hats and caps (that cab be quite cheap but in different colors and shapes) and assorted accessories his size such as goggles, cane, beard, hair clips, tiaras, bindis, bangles etc. Kids love to experiment and they become excellent props for taking cute baby photos.

Go to fisher price.com, they have gifts for kids sorted by age. Prices aren't bad. Or look up toysrus.com, same thing. Buy something "quiet" the parents will really appreciate it!

how about donating to UNICEF on behalf of the child & handing the receipt to the parents? Its different, try it coz. nothing makes sense to a 1 yr. old anyways.

I guess you can choose anything thats colorful and makes lotsa noise...kids that age are pretty happy with that. But what will really make the kid happy would be lotsa time that you spend with him / her...make sure you do that :)

Probably a sing-along-bear or something. Or a stuffed animal that makes noises.
