Easy! Pumpkin shrinkage (unlike human shrinkage) is caused by dehydration. The moisture that was kept inside the pumpkin before you cut it open is now escaping, especially if you've got something hot like a candle going inside. To combat pumpkin shrinkage, get a bowl or other waterproof receptacle that's large enough to fit your pumpkin in, and fill it with enough water that it will just start to pour through the holes you've cut. I soak mine overnight and they're generally good to go by the next morning. Mind you, this only delays the inevitable, but it can postpone shrivel death by about three days.

I don't know if it works, but I've read that rubbing the cut edges of the pumpkin with vaseline will seal in moisture so it won't shrivel and dry out, at least for a few more days.

Rub Vaseline around every part that you cut. It helps keep the moisture in and it doesn't shrivel as fast. Yes you can still light a candle with it and no it won't freeze if you put it outside.

Don't put it outside in Southern California. Mine shriveled already and I only put it out a couple days ago. Too hot here I guess.
