It depends on which Metallica you are talking about. Are you are talking about the "Kill 'Em All"/"Ride the Lightning" Metallica, where Burton was still in the band and they didn't suck? Or are you talking about the stuff they did after that, like the weak-@ss "self-titled (aka black album)" or "Load" in which they are a pathetic shadow of their former selves? Because early Metallica is awesome. And everything else they've done is LAME...just like Godsmack.

I guess you are not a (rock/metal) musician.
If this is correct, you answered your question yourself.
Why?
The music listener mostly focuses on the vocals of bands; stuff like guitar tuning or lick styles, or drum sounds aren't perceived consciously.
What that means?
I've heard a lot of people compare the voices of Godsmack and Metallica, and i myself find they sound similar.

However, it depends to which Metallica you compare it; they changed their style a lot over the years.
80's Metallica is very fast, very treble (high eq frequencies) and very old school metal.
Godsmack, on the other hand, are rather slow, use song schemes that are normally common for pop music and use down tuned guitars and a bass focused sound (low eq frequencies) to artificially increase their "heaviness".
Metallica nowadays is also sometimes downtuned and slow, but still their riffing is definitely more metal than Godsmack.
In my opinion, Godsmack isn't a metal band to begin with.
They just play mainstream heavy rock.
So if someone asks you "What is the difference between Godsmack and Metallica?" Just say "Godsmack sounds like Metallica playing Rock, and Metallica sounds like Godsmack playing Metal" :D

..no. godsmack is more of a mix of post grunge/industrial metal. hell, i think of godsmack as a tribute to alice in chains in a way. metallica; well their sound has changed with every 3-4 albums or so. depends which metallica album you're listening to.

it depends how technical you want to get. They're both "heavy" and played on the radio (making them mainstream metal, as opposed to underground/obscure metal that you might hear on college stations occasionally, but probably no where else). However, I would call Godsmack either nu-metal (hard rock, no solos) or just plain "radio rock." You could probably consider Metallica just general metal or call them classic if you want.

Hell, no!
Metallica's a Thrash metal band. (Though had gone into Progressive metal & Speed Metal.)
Maybe you've heard their Reload or Load album!

Wheras, Godsmack is a Alternative/Industrial band.
