On the topo maps I've seen, the forest is just shaded green.

Usually a tree, but there will be a panel somewhere on the map that lists all the symbols used and their meanings. Some maps use different shades of green to indicate different types of forest or scrub - the darker the green the denser the forest.

a bunch of trees [if you know what type of forest, you may try to draw the kind of tree you may find in the forest]
Pine forest = pine trees = draw somewhat like Christmas trees [with out the ornaments]
Deciduous forest = broad leaved trees
Rain Forest = Tall wide canopy trees

Topo maps are for showing elevations. The ones I studied in college did not show land features.
