Depends on the joke. Be careful - you could get yourself arrested. Or detained for Qs just long enough to miss your flight.

Airport security personnel are not paid to joke. In California you could be arrested for "making terrorist threats." I can't imagine that is a good thing to have to go through. You'd miss your plane. You'd be arrested. You'd have to post bond. You would have to hire a lawyer. If it's your first offense, you might get off with a fine, probation and a suspended sentence. You would have a record. And the material just isn't that funny. If you must laugh at the airport, think about Al Bundy taking his shoes off on the plane and having all the oxygen masks come down.

many years ago in California a hunting party of off duty cops, sheriff's deputies and a highway patrol man ... went on a hunting trip together. When asked about their guns, one, a little drunker than the others said they were going to hijack the plane to Cuba. This was in the 1960's when planes were hijacked a lot. Even with their police id's they were deep into problems, missed a few flights and got to spend some time locked up. They also got into trouble when they got back to work.

They smile at me, unless I make a joke they have to check out.

Then again, I don't expect them to not take what I say seriously when it impact their job.

Kind of like people that get upset when they joke with a police officer about robbing a store, and then get held for a bit while they check it out.

Stupid of the public that does that. Of course, it's also amazing how many people think "joking" includes things that the other person doesn't find funny at all, yet still say, "I was only joking!".

If the other person wasn't smiling, it wasn't "joking". Don't do it.

in these dangerous time, NEVER make a joke about security or anything connected with their job. Joke about the weather, sports, but always avoid any levity when discussing airport security or national security. They take this stuff very seriously, as they should.

Don't do it! When my husband and I were leaving for our honeymoon the guard asked my husband if he had and weapons, in his usual jokester nature he responded "Not yet". The guard was not amused and asked my husband if he wanted to be arrested.

Cavity searches, dog sniffing, detain until plane leaves, cattle prodding. They sure don't laugh.

Lock you in Guantanamo forever. Or until you kill yourself. Welcome to fascist America. Or did you still think you had any vestiges of free speech left?
