The reason you're getting all different answers is because you need to define what the sum of a number means...

...if it means the sum of a number with itself, then the sum of the number with itself would be x+x, and therefore 7*(2x-5).

....or if the "sum of a number" simply means the "addition" of the "minus five" value with the number, it would be 7*(x-5), therefore 7x - 35.

I think It's 7N - 5

I don't think asleep's answer is correct though.

It's 7 x (the sum of a number=N) N - 5
Therefore it's 7N - 5

7(x-5) = 7x - 35

The type of question above tends to assimilate to Diophantus' work on Greek Algebra. In fact, Diophantus was one of the first to convert mathematical questions into symbols so as to abbreviate a question. I gaurantee you that if that question were to appear on a mathematical exam, most every professor would grade the correct answer as being what I wrote above, rather than 7x-5.
