As we know, 99% of the time it's a PEBKAC error -- Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair.
However, it seems there's a much greater market for anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, and other protective software than there is for clues to be forcibly hammered into the heads of lusers. Therefore, the publishers of those programs have some basic threads in common in their advertising: "You're in danger! It's everywhere! You can't understand the danger! You can't do anything about it! (but our software can)" So, they believe it. They believe they're in danger. They believe they can't even understand what the danger is, so they don't even try.
I know someone who refuses to use Firefox, no matter how carefully I explain things. She doesn't think there's any risk to using IE. So I get to clean up the results of the drive-by downloads every so often. But she believes everything she sees on TV. Especially scary things. Even contradictory scary things.
In short, people don't THINK.

its the same thing with vehicles/breaking down!people go off on a tangent and assume that the worst case senario is where u start troubleshooting then work down to lesser causes . i think if u start looking at the smaller reasons first and gradually work your way up until the problem is found it is much easier and less stressful, less time consuming, and less expensive! human nature seems to always fear the worst when its suddenly not in control of what it expects to be in control of .
