Im looking for and planning to buy an inexpensive and reliable external hard drive...it doesnt have to be a lot of space...maybe a 20-40GB...(100GB would be nice).

Save yourself some money and get one built at your local PC store (somewhere that builds PCs, not your larger PC retailers) - for the cost of an off-the-shelf 40gb model, you will most likely be able to get a 120GB+ external drive built.

To get the best bang for your buck (specifically GB for your buck), you can go with a hard drive (external) enclosure + an inexpensive (internal) desktop hard drive. It would end up being a bit larger (5.25" vs 3.5"), but you'll get more space for your money.

Make sure the enclosure is USB 2.0 Hi-Speed, same format as hard drive (e.g. IDE vs SATA), and hot swap-able.

If you want to go with the pre-built 3.5" solutions, again look for USB 2.0 Hi-Speed drives.
