Yes i think it is acceptable , during the vedic period it has to be noted that , the brahmins, kshatriyas and vaishayas were all donning the poonool only at one period of time where the other two castes were not able to keep up with the Dos and don'ts of how one should conduct if wearing the poonool , but the saiva pillais have always been keeping up to the standard practises .

I am a saiva pillai.there is no comparision as for as marriage is concerned. Now a days people are more broad minded and accept love marriages. Both are highly religious and orthodax.Even brahmins are also saivas, but only iyengars are different. They dont even consider Iyers.

A man and a pig are not equal. Among men, what kind of inequality do you perceive? Poet Subramanya Bharati, himself a high caste Brahman said:-

O Child, There is no caste
Hence, it is sinful to show
distinction between men.
Those who are learned
the virtuous and affectionate
are the higher in the ladder
And the rest are the lower.

It is painful that such questions are asked, even this day.

Acceptable to whom? Perhaps it is time that we put aside the ancient taboos and traditions of our ancestors and joined the modern world. If two people love each other, that is all that is important.
