My pc is on the fritz big time and I know think that it is a fam problem (thanks to some answers to another Q!). The fan gets really loud at times then sounds like it is barely keeping up at other times.
I have torn my h.d. apart and added hardware before, but before I take it apart, am i looking for something that is not evident? Is there more than 1 fan? Most importantly, what kind of costs could I be looking at to replace the fan?
Thanks for your help w/this!

When was the last time you cleaned all the dust out from inside your PC? Dirt and dust can build up and not only cause heat to not be dissipated but also cause the fans to run erratically. Dirt can throw off the balance of the fan blades and cause them to make noises and not blow properly.

First off, you can't take apart your hard drive and expect it to work properly so I'm not believing that part.

Open your case while the computer is running and listen closely to identify which fan is making the noise. If it's a fan connected to your case, it'll be no problem. Just take out the fan and take it to the store and find a fan of matching size. Probably 80mm

if it's your processor fan, it'll be the one right on your motherboard. If this is the case, you need to find out what socket your processor is then disconnect the fan using the clamps or whatever it is that holds your fan in place. You can take it to the store as well and buy a fan that matches your CPU socket

If it's coming from your power supply, then you need to disconnect everything from it and take it out. a new power supply can cost $60 and up

there r two fans in a pc one on the motherboard and one is on the back were the power cord runs into if that one is making funny sounds blow it out with a high powerd blower (Like the thing that comes with an airmattress) or go to radio shak and look for commpressed air and get it its like 10$ now if that dosent stop that funny sound then u have to buy a new power sorce (from best buy or circut city) hope this was helpful.

there is some times as little as one fan (or none for water cooled) on the cpu its self other times there is one on the cpu, video card, psu, and case fan or more. fans are not that expensive from 7 dollars fore a case fan to 40 for a brand new and very nice cpu fand and heat sink
