Or just the Oaxaca area?

No, Mexico is not unsafe to visit. The problems in Oaxaca have been allowed to escalate way out of control in THAT state, that is for sure. But even now the Federal Police are retaking control, the striking teachers are going back to work and the Mexican Congress, Senate and even his own party the (PRI) have asked the state governor to step aside, so things SHOULD get a lot better quickly even in Oaxaca.

In the best known tourist areas such as Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán, Ixtapa-Zihuatenejo, Huatulco, Cancun etc., you actually have "tourist police" to protect the vital tourist dollars, you are probably as safe in those areas as you would be in say, Canada!

The big cities are big cities and you need at least the same care as you would in any big city you don't know.

The problems in Oaxaca only effect the city, yet the coastal areas hours away have had a drop in tourism.

In addition to Oaxaca and areas of Mexico City, some border towns are high crime areas. Most of the rest of Mexico is safe. I have walked late at night in many places without a worry.

I'm an American who has lived in Mexico for more than 30 years. It is definitely safe to travel there. Just stay away from the Oaxaca area and always be careful in any large city like Mexico City. Take the usual precautions that one would take in any large city!

Well not that I know, Mexico is safe, but yeah some parts in Oaxaca aren't really safe, especially in Mexico City.Well I live in El Paso and have to go to Ciudad Juarez everyday so no it is safe, most people consider Mexico unsafe just because of stupid narcotrafficants. I've lived in a big city like Leon and Cd.Juarez, but yeah its safe. But be careful in big cities.

Just the Oaxaca area

Just like in the USA, there are some places in Mexico that you as a traveler and American really should not visit.

Be careful in Mexico City's Zona Roja district and try ot avoid Oaxaca if at all possible. Other that that. Keep your eyes peeled to suspicious activity and don't act like a typical "Guero" when you get over there...

Have Fun!

Just the Oaxaca city area. The rest of the state and the country is very safe to visit.

Whether you're looking for colonial or prehispanic cities, adventure, culture, beaches, nigh life, Mexico has it all!

Just some general tips: Avoid political meetings, dark lone streets, street sales persons and havanero chilly!

Hope it helps.

Perfectly safe in almost the whole country. Just avoid border cities and Oaxaca central area. In Mexico City take care as you'd do in big cities as NYC or LA.

But anything could happen anywhere, you know, Murphy's law.

Avoid: Oaxaca, Chiapasa, and Cd. Juarez.
