depends on the wall, depends on if he knows how to punch.
example.
he hit the drywall inside wall of a house and penetrated but smashed his little finger knuckle on a stud while the lead 3 knuckles went through the wall.
scenario #2: he doesn't know how to punch bare handed correctly and uses the entire plane of the fist as the striking surface rather than just the lead 2 knuckles. I can see this happening if he hit a cement wall flatly. the last 2 knuckles on the hand shouldn't be used as striking surfaces in a fist.

Like one of the other answers said. It is probably a Boxer's fx. Can happen to boxers a lot. Get it checked out by a doctor before complications arise such as permanent deformity or limited use of the finger

If the question is to why he punched the wall. Maybe he's angry about something and thats the only way he know how to get his fustration off. He's the only one who knows why. Try talking to him and see if he would open up.

Probably because that knuckle is broken or badly sprained. Get him a x-ray soon.

Probably fractured that knuckle...he should see more than just any doctor if he is doing that sort of thing.

take him to the doctors. He might have a hairline fracture.
My dad pulled a stunt like that(when I was a kid)...and broke his hand....had to wear a cast for several weeks.
anger management would be also something he should look into.
