in a relationship:
no...i jump in with both feet...and yes, i usually end up getting hurt but i have some great memories that i would not have had otherwise..
in life:
i do not avoid things just because they may hurt me. i find that i am more careful when there is danger involved.
my grandmother spent her entire life woulda, coulda, shoulda-ing it away and never taking a chance. she always played it safe. she was offered a scholarship to college in the '20's, but instead she decided to get married and work for the rest of her life trying to make ends meet. she could have had an education and it would have changed her life (actually, she could have changed all of our lives)...but instead, she was left with a deram that was left unfulfilled and eventually it turned into some really bad feelings...
i took her example and i went in the opposite direction. i promised myself that i would not do that. i have a list of things that i want to do and i am slowly but surely going thru that list trying to make the best of my life. my moto is that if it isn't going to hurt me or anyone else, why not? sometimes i end up hurting myself physically, but i also figure that i can die sitting in my own house watching tv and avoiding life (especially since katrina....i live in baton rouge). after katrina, it really made a lot of us re-think how we were living our lives and what we find to be of value. i learned that physical, material things can be taken away, but memories cannot. we are a result of the way that we live our lives, and we are a combination of all of our experiences, good or bad. i just choose to have more experiences than most people do.
i have friends who say that they admire me... i don't see what the big deal is... most people just sit around wishing that they could do something, and they rehearse it so many times that they could probably do it anyways. i just get into the car and go somewhere if i want to, i eat lunch by myself, i walk up to total strangers and say hello. now, don't get me wront, i don't do anything that is totally crazy and stupid, but i think i am not afraid to live my life.
in answer to your question; no, i don't think that i am "glutton for punishment".

I completely avoid any situation that even seems like I might get hurt. Not the best way to live I suppose, but it works for the moment.

I avoid some things that make me upset...but when it comes to matters of the heart or my most important dreams....for some reason I am unfailingly willing to get right into my heart's face and let it hurt me....I don't know why, but I've just always been that way....

I just avoid them. I've learned in life it's better not to get hurt.

Well, I wouldn't stick my hand in a fire,
or walk on a bed of nails, but I have made
the same mistakes in relationships.
Guess I'm occasionally guilty of gluttony...

Its human nature to avoid what hurts us yet we also set ourselves up to get hurt all the time which is also human nature.

I think sometimes we're drawn to that which hurts us. I can't explain that, but it seems to be the case quite often. Human nature is so strange.
