In recent years, I think American Football has overcome Baseball as America's pastime.
However, 40-50 years ago, baseball was America's most popular sport. Football and Basketball did not have the popularity that MLB had at the time. Both the NFL and NBA have grown in popularity and they have had better management the last 20 years.

Baseball is kind of slow paced, for the most part. you can go to the game, have it on at home, and do other stuff, talk to your friends, etc. That doesn't exactly answer your question, but explains maybe why it's "pasttime". I think there's a lot of strategy in baseball, probably more than other sports. To me, that's what makes it interesting and fun. Plus, I think pitching and hitting at the major league level have got to be the two hardest things to do in all of sports.

It was termed "America's favorite pasttime" due to it's popularity of the time. My GUESS is that it got the name during the 40's when folks would have their radio in the window and people in the neighborhood would stop what they were doing and listen in.
There is nothing like sharing baseball memories with the older generations. I'm 46 and around 20 years ago I used to ask an older man his recollections of the game. He was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan and one of his stories was around the homer that Branca served up. He was sick about it and had to stop driving.
It brings generations and races together in ways that real life fails to indicate. I so wish that I can warp back to the 30's and watch the Philadelphia Athletics dynasty of 1929-31. I have great memories of sitting at the kitchen table with Ma ironing on the board, Pa reading the newspaper as we listened to the Phillies and I kept the boxscore. That was back in 71.
It is a simple game that was born in simpler times.

Baseball is America's Past-Time because it is probably the only sport that has been played for as long as this country and its people have been here. The game is a variation of a British game called "rounders" and, like other things such as politics and religion, the sport was "Americanized" and made better. And, like many of this country's ideals - Democracy, Free Trade, Capitalism - baseball has spread throughout the world and has penetrated places even the United States ideals cannot. However, baseball has opened doorways in certain countries for America and its ideals.
The history of baseball coincides with the history of the United States. Like this country and its rules, baseball has had to modify itself. Like this country, baseball has hit some lowpoints to where many thought it would die. However, baseball has never died and baseball will endure, if not forvever on the playing fields of schools, public recreation areas and professional athletic fields, then in the hearts and minds of the majority of Americans.

Who said it was America's Pasttime? It can be argued that football is America's pasttime , after all football is the most popular sport in America. The NFL gets the most ratings out of all professional sports in America , as does college football , while baseball's World Series ratings continue to reach new lows on FOX. The time of baseball being "America's Pasttime" is long gone.
In the olden days , when baseball was the most popular sport in America in the 40's , 50's , 60's , 70's , and 80's it was easy to call baseball the pasttime of America. But with sagging ratings , and Americans more apathetic about a game they find boring , football has taken over as the new king of American sports.

Yes, it is. The NFL is popular on 17 Sunday afternoons and 16 Monday nights. MLB is popular 162 days and nights. NFL tickets are prohibitively expensive. Other than Fenway, most stadiums in baseball have fairly inexpensive tickets. Both sports are very popular, but I would have to say it's still baseball.

i think its known as america's past time for a couple of reasons. first it is played more often than any other sport as there are twice as many regular season games as the next closest sport. it is truly a sport that america can watch and pass the time away on a daily basis for 6 solid months plus.
also it is one of the more family friendly sports, more affordable to purchase tickets than for any of the other major sports and much more inducive to being a relaxing family outing. im not saying you cant have a good family outing attending a hockey or football game, but certainly those venues are much more aggressive(and expensive).

It ISN'T. It got that title, proably gave itself the Title, years ago when it was the dominate game. Now it won't let the title go, although we know Football has since passed it. For example WHO watchs or pays attention to the Baseball draft? Yet the NFL Draft is broadcast and people watch and in the least most read the lists the next day to see who their team drafted, and actually recognize names.
