Of course not. If you wouldnt drink it, then dont give it your baby. And i agree it might be your pump, not getting cleaned all the way, or if you had thrush at the time you stored it and not known it, that would cause it. I would say to maybe boil some water, immerse the pump for only a sec or two. and then air dry on nothing that will hold and absorb the water, so i'd say like a strainer or bottle rack, or it you have a dishwasher, wash it alone in it, with no other dishes. If the problem is still there after awhile, then i would see a doctor, you might have a infection and not know it. Also, if you have any sort of smell from your pads, or bra, then i'd get checked, because thrush can come and go at any time while breastfeeding, and cause your milk to get sour. Good Luck, and Bless you for breastfeeding. I am 100% for it. !!

No. I'm guessing your pump is not sterile. I had a similar problem. I'd read that breastmilk is good for several hours without refrigeration, but mine didn't even seem to refrigerate well with my first son and I didn't even realize it was bad till some time later. With my second son I realized that the problem with my milk the first time around must have had to do with the pump, because my bras which had my leaked milk on them and my bra pads didn't smell bad sometimes even days later when I washed my pads in the laundry I noticed they still had a caramel like smell not a stinky one.
I love EC has an interesting answer, I had no idea about that enzyme. I must have had an awful lot of it with my first son and maybe one molecule if any the second time. Wow. Now I have something new to look up. Thanks.

I agree with all of these answers, but there is also another factor that may have caused the milk to go bad... When you freeze milk, it is very possible that some of the other ODORS in your freezer may have been absorbed by the milk. We eat a lot of fish in my home, and fish odor can be absorbed by other foods in the freezer, even if the package is not damaged.
If it isn't the breast pump and if you don't have thrush... then the next time you freeze your milk, put the bottles inside of a Ziploc storage bag for good measure. They also have breastmilk storage bags that repel odor. You could even place a box of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda in the freezer as well.

Most of the previous answerers must not have experience with the enzyme lipase. If there is a lot of lipase in mother's milk, it will quickly change taste from sweet to sour or soapy in a matter of hours and will have that taste when it is thawed. However the milk is not bad and if the baby will drink it, there is no reason to throw it away. Please read my kellymom link about lipase and breastmilk for more information.

Yes. Your breastmilk may contain a higher level of an enzyme that produces that smell & taste. All breastmilk contains it, just some women produce more of it. You can always ask you ped or lactation consultant for more information. Now if it looks curdled, that is another story, and you should discard it.

No, breastmilk should have a sweet taste.
Breastmilk should only be frozen for 6 months max in a refrigerator freezer and 12 months in a deep freezer.
Thawed breastmilk should be used or dumped within 24 hours of thawing.
If you have anymore questions contact your doctor or your county health dept.

I freeze my milk and defrost it all the time and never had a bad smell. You have to be so careful about sterilizing everything till your baby is 12 months it is not worth making your baby sick. Everytime I express milk I sterilize my pump and the bottles.
It is normal for the milk to seperate have watery bits and then clumpy creamy bits but it shouldn't smell.
You should go and see a doctor or baby clinic nurse.
