Can the government find out exactly who I am by an IP adress. What if I'm on a network of many computers. Can they find out your comp. name and workgroup via IP adress? I heard about some guy getting arrested through an IP track. However, this was a dial up service.

You IP is your 'internet footprint'...

Being on dialup or any other internet connection makes no difference. All connections have an IP.
Anyone can get tracked to their specific IP connection.

If you're on a large network (with internal IP's), it is difficult but not impossible, the goverment agency would simply compare internal network translation logs with their own records (showing the external ip being connected to the main ip which in turn connects to your internal ip...)..

Then they just have to find out who was on that system at that time...

Really not that hard.

Not from IP address alone. Many internet service providers assign IP's randomly when users log on, especially with dial-up. If you use dsl or cable and leave you connection all the time then it would be easier. They would also need the logs from the ISP's to see that you were assigned that IP at the time in question. The are also plenty of free online proxies that you could use to hide your IP. Lastly if you connect from an internet cafe or something similar then it becomes even more difficult to track. If you do something from home you screwed though.

You/me/the general public can't see someone's IP address from a Yahoo Answers post, but Yahoo can. And, say at the behest of the government/law, Yahoo could go to your ISP (gleaned from the IP address) and track you down through your ISP account to your house (or at least to the computer you used to post with).

They could track the ip address, but would probably need a warrant.
Each section of the ip address is an identifier and the service provider could track that if needed.

Yes, once they have your IP address all they gotta do is subpoena the ISP for your records and customer info.
