One day I was in a hurry and discovered this as a very effective and fast way. Sounds yucky, but it isn't. The toilet ends up smelling clean. Afterwards, I just throw away the cotton rag.
Put on gloves. Open windows. Flush toilet. Put in 1/2 cup laundry detergent and a little bleach into the bowl. Put an old hand towel or rag about 1/2 size of a bath towel into the bowll of bleach & soap water, wring it out and use it to wipe down the outside of the toilet, the seat, the fittings, and then the rim of the toilet and last, inside the toilet bowl. Then flush until the water is clear. Rinse the towel in clear water and wipe down the outside, seat, and rim. Flush again and rinse your towel and wipe all again just to make sure there is no more soap residue.
If you still aren't satisfied, take a little Shark Steamer and aim a few quick spurts of steam on the fittings (that's the hinge part where you can't reach to wipe). I spray steam on all parts of the toilet. If there is any hint of odor, it's gone after the brief steam treatment.
We have tile floors in our bathrooms and I spurt that and the tiled walls with steam too. Just need good ventilation for moisture to leave the room.

I use Mr Clean. I take a sponge and start from the outside top of the toilet down to the bottom. Then I take Clorox bleach and pour into the toilet and let it set 5 to 10 min and then take my toilet brush and swish around the toilet and especially under the rim and also the bottom of the toilet seat and wipe. When you work with clorox make sure it doesn`t splash on your clothes as the bleach will ruin them. Then all you have to do is flush the toilet. You can also buy the brush with the disposable cloth with bleach and toss it or flush it...

I like to start at the top and work my way down to the floor. I spray it with Lysol all purpose cleaner with bleach then wipe it down with old hand towels. Then i use clorox toilet bowl cleaner with the toilet brush than flush it and your done.

1) Drop in cleaner (I use denture tablets but many things work just fine)
2) Swoosh around under the rim with the brush.
3) Leave it for a while to soak.
4) Flush before use.
