Originally, it was the only shape that could be manufactured reliably. It kept its shape for a long time because lamp shades were designed to form around, and be supported by, the bulb. Other shapes did come into use. Some were cylindrical because it looked cool. Some were made to look like candle flames. Some were made with pointed tips so they would focus well in flashlights. The original round was still the most common because it was still the cheapest and there wasn't a good enough reason to change it. Fluorescents and compact flourescents had their own shapes for their own reasons. Compact fluorescents were made to fit into the same fixtures already in use for incandescent bulbs.

Echoing flexjr77's answer, I will say it helps mitigate any reflection of light within the bulb as the light emanates from the wires. If the bulb had "corners," it might not illuminate the room as effectively.

So that the light is spread in an almost 360 Degree approach.
If the lightbulb was a triangle, you would have different sections of light intensities, and possibly weird angled light and shadows.
