You could do that, but it's hazardous. The better solution would be to get a block heater installed. This is a small heater element that warms the coolant in the engine. Most auto shops can install one pretty easily; your 75 Chevy shouldn't present any real problems. They will knock out a freeze plug on the block, and thread the element into its place. You end up with an electrical plug hanging out of the hood. You then plug that into an extension cord, and remove it when you are ready to start the car. They work well.

The block heater is the way to go. Plug it into a switched outlet or a timer plugged into an outlet. Run it for an hour or two before you try starting the car. Also , try using 5W30 motor oil if it turns over hard. How cold does it get where you are? Here it gets -40 F a few times in the winter. If it is going to be that cold, we run the block heater all night. Keeping it in a garage also helps.

You don't say where you are, so we don't know what kind of winter temperature you experience, but if you are in the Canadian prairies, or the northern States like North Dakota area, you definitely need the block heater installed, a circulating heater in the heater hose, or a rad hose heater. As an occasional measure, you can put a heater like a car warmer under there, but don't use a household heater, they aren't protected enough to use in the outdoors.

Also you can go with a thicker Motor Oil thats if you are gettin dry starts. I switched to a 5W-30 Mobil 1 synthetic oil and it took care of my dry starts. Also Its better to run on if you have a heavy foot.

get an electric oil dipstick or a coolant heater (block heater) but you dont mention if its hard to turn over or hard to start, if its hard to start check the choke on the carb, i bet its not working correctly.
