I'm recently learning about the SATs and I had a question about the scoring. I know that if you get one question wrong, you lose 1/4 of a point. But if you skip a question, you don't get any points gained or lost? doesn't that mean you lose that point? I don't understand that

Think of it this way. When you begin an SAT, you start off with nothing. Every question that you get correct, you get one point. For every question wrong (except grid-ins, I believe), you lose one-fourth of a point. For every question skipped, nothing is lost or gained. Therefore, four incorrect questions will cancel out a correct answer, but four skipped questions will not help or hurt you.

Contrary to the previous (on my view) answer, the SATs are NOT computer based. You can and should skip questions you don't understand. As others have said, a wrong answer will add (-1/4) point to your score, while a skipped answer will add 0 points to your score.

With computer-based testing, I don't think it is possible to skip a question. Once you get a question wrong, the next question is easier, meaning your overall score will be lower.

It sounds like they take total of whole points(answered correctly) and 3/4 points(answered incorrectly). Skipped questions are thrown out. Then once they are totaled, that is your score.

No it just means that no point is rewarded to you for not answering that question. So basically you get 0 for that question.

It means that you loose whatever the points the question is based on. So ya you basically get zero.
