40 Animals = Hens + Sheep
100 Legs = (Hens * 2legs) + (Sheep * 4legs)

rewrite using just letters

40 = H + S
100 = (H*2) + (S*4)

solve "40 = H + S" for H

40 - S = H

replace H in "100 = (H*2) + (S*4)" with "40 - S", since we now know "40 - S = H"

100 = ( (40-S) * 2) + (S * 4)

collapse the above

100 = ( 80 - 2S ) + 4S
100 = 80 - 2S + 4S
100 = 80 + 2S

solve for S

20 = 2S (subtract 80 for each side)
10 = S (divide each side by 2)

There are 10 sheep! So how many Hens?

40 heads means there are total of 40 animals (hens and sheep). Hens have two legs, sheep have 4 legs. There are 10 sheep (10 heads and 40 legs) and 30 hens (30 heads and 60 legs). Total heads - 40. Total legs - 100
