What were the major consequences of that expansion

Effective leadership, of course. The Roman system provided a great system of checks and balances among consuls, emperors and censorates. Also, a powerful military and on-going nationalism increased the people's support in a conquering Rome. Also, a reverence from other ancient powers such as Egypt and Gaul maintained Rome's status as empire extraordinaire. However, as Rome grew larger and larger, it was harder to centralize power. As a result, inner conflict and attacks from foreign barbarians lowered Rome's military and imperial power... I hope that helps!
