I actually lived in the Plano area for four years. It's definitely not ghetto.. it's actually the opposite of. There's a lot of new construction and some great houses in the area. Very nouveau riche. Definitely a classy area to live in. It's more of a family area though, if you want something where the nightlife is more active I would suggest looking closer to Dallas. (Also, go Dallas rather than Fort Worth, it's a little more happenin' in my opinion :)).

Uptown seems to be where a lot of singles stuff happens, or Highland Park (SMU and all). Frankly, I would probably live in Plano to avoid traffic. It'll be expensive and totally yuppie, but you'll be closer to work. I did a temp job in N. Plano and lived just South-east of Dallas and had an 1.5 hour commute that like to of killed me. Sorry for the digression, go with Plano, there still seems to be a lot of young professionals who live in the area.

Go on some site like rent.com or apartments.com. I found a very nice apartment in the Park Cities area of Dallas that way. Dallas has lots of new, attractive and in some cases even fairly affordable apartments and condos that are in town, close to entertainment etc. I would not ever want to live in a suburb as a single person (Done that and thought I would go out of my mind - glad to be now in town, close to work and close to things to do.)

I lived in arlington for 2 years, it's right between fort worth and dallas, the rangers play in arlington and its not ghetto at all. the location means you can get just about anywhere pretty easily, but you're not in such a city like atmosphere. if you want city, move into dallas. you'll get more nightlife there.
