If you have windows xp all you have to do is install the new hard drive as your d drive and run the files and settings transfer wizard. That will put all your os onto the new hard drive. Then after your done shut your computer down and remove your old hard drive and install your new one in it's place.

There's imaging software available like Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost which should be able to copy the drive properly. That costs some money. If you have a free SATA or IDE Port (depending on the drive type and the supported features of your Mother board), you can install the hard disk and use it as a second disk, without needing to copy your original C drive.

There are open source CDs that can help, such as The UltimateBootCD for Windows or Knoppix but unless you know what you are doing, erm, I wouldn't recommend using them. Since you are asking how to do this, I would guess that you are not an advanced user.

It may just be economical for you to pay someone to do this for you, rather than go through the aggravation of possibly destroying your data (worst case scenario) or just spending hours trying to figure out how to do this.

You can just install the new hard drive as a second drive, leave Windows on the original drive, and use the new drive for file storage.

But if you want to remove the original drive and only use the new one, you will need to install Windows on it. You can purchase a Windows CD, or purchase a "cloning" program, such as Ghost or Drive Image, which allows you to make a perfect copy of the original drive onto the new drive.

? the CPU and RAM are the only things that communicate with each other. I'm a little confused, I think you mean you bought a hardrive for your PC? There's a program called "Norton Ghost" that allows you to copy all of your files from one hardrive to another. It's edged a little more towards the advanced users, but there are a number of sites that give instructions on how you can do this if you google it.

No issues. CPU's are not factored into your OS configuration. They don't require drivers or special software. They just work. Most of the drivers for your other hardware should be the same / similar. You might run into one or two snags, but Vista might even be able to sort them out for you. If not, visit HP and go to the support / downloads page for your model, get the files you need.

Just hook it up to the IDE cable that the other hard drive is connected to. Set the drive to slave with the little "jumper" on the back (there should be a legend somewhere telling you which setting is slave)and you are good to go.
The other HDD will have windows and that one can store data / files.

Two options, one is make it a slave or the secondary Hard disk. If you don't have the mounting space for this, you could use a program like Symantec Ghost to make an exact copy from one disk to the second one.
