I have a sister that is 9 months pregnant they induced her by breaking her water. Is there a certain amount of time that they have before they have to get the baby out. I guess my question is, how long is the baby able to survive with out the amniotic fluid

Her body will replenish the amniotic fluid periodically. Don't worry, her OB won't let baby stay in too long. Remember, some women stay in labor for HOURS and HOURS before delivering. Your sister will be fine and so will her baby.

It's nice to see that you are so concerned. You'll be a great Aunt!

The amniotic fluid is constantly regenerating....that is why they keep changing the pads she is laying on. It is best the baby is dellivered in under 24 hrs after breaking the waters to lessen the chance of infection. Most of the time though labor progresses faster once the water is broken. If a woman is in labor too long and nothing is helping since she and the baby are monitored then they can and most times will perform a c-section to make sure there arent any additional problems.

The baby can survive indefinitly without amniotic fluid. It regenerates, and sometimes the amniotic sac reseals.

Generally doctors want the baby out within 24 hours of the water breaking because of the risk of infection HOWEVER women who have had their water break prematurely can go weeks in the hospital on drugs to prevent labour starting to give the baby a chance to develope.

-I was in labor for 3 days. My water spontaneously broke day 2. Didn't have the baby until late day 3. SO my baby was in-utero for more than 24 hours after my water broke. He was just fine. Infection is a concern but as long as the baby is being monitored (heart rate etc) the doctors will do what is best for baby and mom. The baby is getting its oxygen and nouishment from the umbilical cord so the baby should be just fine. Congrats on the imminent birth of your neice or nephew.

Amniotic fluid is constantly replenishing itself so it's always there, even if the bag is broken. She'll likely end up with a c-section though because they will only allow her to go 24 hours.

if she doesn't begin to dialate within a certain timeframe, they will likely do a C section.
