Not so much rude as asking for a fight, or at least a discussion that could turn acrimonious.

I generally say "I prefer not to discuss politics...how bout them Cowboys?!"

It's not rude if it's someone who is in your 'inner circle'. If anyone outside asks you, you probably don't want to get into a big political debate over it...so just tell them that you prefer to keep your political notions private. Everyone has their own opinions and sometimes they become aggressively adamant trying to persuade others. Keep it to yourself!

I don't think it's rude as much as it is no one's business. My usual response is "I'm sorry, I don't discuss that with anyone"
