The film, like the films Psycho, Deranged, and The Silence of the Lambs, was loosely inspired by Ed Gein. Gein did wear human skin, but he acted alone and did not use a chainsaw. Although the film's opening would have one believe that the events are factual, it is merely a scare tactic, called the false document technique, to frighten the audience. The movie was filmed from 15 July 1973 - 14 August 1973, while the opening narrative claims that the events took place on 18 August 1973, so it would be impossible for the film to be based on actual events which had not happened at the time of filming. Libraries in Burkburnett, Texas and nearby Wichita Falls regularly receive requests for copies of newspaper articles related to the false actual events. [5]

The texas chainsaw massacre is based on a true incident not actually a true story.Certainly there was no real family of cannibalistic chainsaw murderers slaughtering people in Texas, nor any actual series of chainsaw-related killings.

yes it is and they have made that movie before. Personally I think there are lot of movies that could be more entertaining and enlightening than showing people doing evil things. just to make a few million dollars. That type of movie tend so make some sick people decide to become a copy cat. Also
"Fargo" was based upon a true story.

Actually it is true, in the mid 70's in Texas this event really hapend. In the new movie, when the cop goes down to the stair with the voice recorder, it is actual police video from the investigation. The clip of the guys nails scratching on the wall on the top of the stairs.

People are going to tell you that it is not. They will tell you that it is based on Ed Gein. But when you watch the movie I don't know why the heck Ed supposedly inspired the movie. Leatherface and Ed don't have to much in common.. and Ed was from Wisconsin.. not Texas. He never even used a chainsaw.
My dad said he lived in Texas when it was going on. I am going to believe my dad. But other people are going to believe what Tobe Hooper has stated in some interviews.. but I guess I'll just believe what floats around. It's more fun and interesting! :)

It is very loosly based on a real killer Ed Gein.
However, there is a lot of the story that is not true.
Here is a website to check it out:

Nope. I saw "The beginning" last weekend and asked my b/f the same thing. I had always thought that it was. Turns out that it's "inspired" by the serial killer Ed Gein who also inspired Psycho and Hannibal Lector. The Hewitt family was totally made up.
