What are the working conditions like in today's meat packing plants?

OK I've seen some movies and read some books (like the old title "The Jungle") that portrays work in these places as really dangerous and demanding work. Is this still the case ?(back in the 80's my friends mom had to quit a poultry plant due to carpal tunnel syndrome)

Conditions have improved in the last 100 years but it is still nasty, demanding work. They are slaughtering animals after all and there are only so many ways you can do it.
