because Pres. Bush has totally forgotton what the separation of church and state means...this is evident in many of his actions..very sad indeed, especially for medical researchers, who could save lives, with new discoveries !!!

The Bush Admn. doesn't want to anger it's base. The stem cell research debate has the ability to stir up the Christian conservative voters as much as the abortion issue. Bush has enough problems right now and will no doubt try to use this issue to get the conservatives to vote Republican again in the midterm elections. For some reason he believes the American voters value the stem cells of the fetus more than the lives of our soldiers, veterans without medical services, civilian casualties in Iraq or our own children and unfortunately some voters would say that they do.

There is no state or federal law anywhere in the US that prohibits stem cell research. President Bush is the first President to allow ANY federal funding of stem cell research. The only restriction he imposed was against funding research on NEW lines of stem cells.
There are currently 72 diseases that can be treated with adult stem cells. There are ZERO treatments based on embryonic stem cells. The LIE about banning stem cell research has always been 100% political.

Fortunately Bush can't stop public embryonic stem cell research...yet. Or else he would. He's put a temporary stop to government research.
Meanwhile embryonic stem cells are being tossed into the garbage can every day. It's another religion vs. science political issue.
Bush and his religious base are scared silly that if scientist start cloning stem cells, that they'll start cloning people and try to take over the world with their evil scientist plans! You know, the same way they did with polio vaccine.

They are allowing research on existing stem cell lines. The problem is that they have been reproduced to the point that it is compromising the integrity of the research.
Many sources of available stem cells are being destroyed each year, this is a shame as this type of research could yield great advances in therapies for diseases and conditions which currently have limited or no treatment options.
The fear is that embryos will be terminated just for research and this is far from the case. I guess to the opponents of this type of research that potential life is far more important than the suffering of those afflicted waiting for a cure.

Because this research in large part is done on embryonic stem cells, which have derived from embryos that develop from eggs that have been sterilized. Essentially, you have to create life (a baby) and then kill it do do the research. Although there are other methods of getting these research cells, Bush is anti-abortion and therefore will not allow these fertilized eggs to be used for research. I think it is VERY important and necessary to develop this research because US is far behind other countries in stem cell research. There are a handful of private companies that do stem cell research in the US, but hopefully our next president realizes the importance and will allow it.

The debate is kind of similar to the abortion debate. The most adaptable, or easiest stem cells to use, are found in embryons. People who oppse stem cell research usually say that it is un ethical since by using the embryon for stem cell research, we are killing the embryon, a human life.....

Don't know. I am more concerned with why people haven't been looking at the other stem cell researches not using embryo that have actually helped find cures. So far adult stem cells have helped people walk while all we have is a giant bag of maybe's for the baby stem cells.

There is nothing wrong with stem cell research, the issues lie with embryonic stem cell research. My suggestion to you is to stop watching cnn, do your own research and thinking then re-ask your question.

the research is allowed.
There is a difference between adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells.
The debate is about giving government funds to embryonic stem cell research, which in some peoples eyes is murdering a baby.
If people who are against abortions because they believe life begins at conception, then it would be hypocritical to allow someone to destroy an embryo.
as I mentioned, the research (embryonic stem cell research) is allowed, and will be as long as abortion is legal. It is just not receiving funding from the government.

Just a theory, but I think it is because George Bush gets a payoff from the drug company's, do you realize that if they ever come up with a cure for a disease that the drug company's would go broke, they market medicines to treat a disease, if they can keep you on dope the rest of your life then they make more money. Fetal stem cell research offers hope for people with many different afflictions.
