This is an easy one, if you're reading the play.

Right after Romeo marries Juliet, he runs into Tybalt outside. Tybalt challenges Romeo and is extremely rude to him, but Romeo ignores all the insults and keeps going on about how much he LOVES Tybalt.

Neither Mercutio nor Tybalt has any idea that Romeo is now married to Tybalt's cousin, so they both think he's a big wuss. Note that Romeo does not explain why he is refusing to fight.

Disgusted and ashamed of Romeo's behavior, Mercutio jumps in to fight Tybalt in Romeo's place.

Romeo tries to stop them from fighting, and in the process, he's in the way. Tybalt is able to stab Mercutio under Romeo's arm without him even realizing it.

romeo refuses to fight because he and Tybalt are now related. so Mercutio calls romeo a coward, and starts to fight Tybalt himself. romeo trys to break them apart, and while he is holding Mercutio's arm down, Tybalt stabs Mercutio. Mercutio dies. and gives the "a plague on both you houses" speech.

oh just read it.

Mercutio duels with Tybalt. Tybalt kills Mercutio. Romeo kills Tybalt and subsequently gets banned from Verona.

Remind me again, what happened to Rosaline?

It would probably be a lot easier for you to look these up in the crib notes than ask through yahoo answers. Sparknotes.com has free crib notes for Romeo and Juliet that include plot summaries. They also have many other works. I found this website very helpful in the past for many different classes.
