The culture was different back then, he is only thinking the way society basically was back then. Most women stayed home and men worked to provide. He's kinda stuck in the past. But you can't blame him, it's just how things were. the women's lib didn't start til later, after he had his mind & morals formed. Nowdays, a woman can't afford NOT to have an education and something to fall back on even if she does marry a man who can afford all the bills. You never know this marriage will be forever, and you have to be prepared. Try telling him that you need college not only as a backup, but also to help any future grandchildren by having a good education, and that maybe you WANT to have a career besides homemaker.

No offense but I think your father is way wrong about what he thinks of women and college. There are more women going to college than men and there are more successful women than men in the US right now. I'm not just saying this because I'm a girl, but because it's based on statistics!!! And I plan on going to college and become succesfull. Sure going to Vietnam may have been tough on your father but I think that he could still go to college!!! I think your father is wrong! Women do NOT need to marry rich to be successful!!!

My grandfather would be in his 90s if he were alive today. A devout Catholic, he made sure his only child, a daughter, my mom, would never have do depend on anybody economically. The tradition continues. I am glad he was such an unconventional man. I think it is fine to marry money, provided a woman has the capacity to be self sufficient or in case of serious injury or death to her spouse, can be at the helm.

Go to college if that is what YOU want to do with your life. Unless what you are looking for is a man to provide for you right now or in the near future you will need the skills to take care of yourself.
Heck you should want to have the skills to take care of yourself anyway so that if and when you marry its because you want to not because you have no other choice.

what if the women choses to live a single life and doesnt find the need to marry? does this mean that she should marry a rich guy anyway, even if she doesnt love him? the cost of living is definately getting more expensive. if the women marries a guy with a good job, and they decide to have child, what would happen if he lost his job? its better to be safe than sorry.
