Since you specified "legal" downloads, I would point out that iTunes now has the ability to let you use PayPal as a payment method. PayPal will allow you to set up a checking account as a payment option; of course, this does not totally remove you having to give some of your financial information to an online entity, if your only problem is that you don't have a credit card, but do have bank account, problem solved. And, of course, if you sell enough on eBay, you can use that to bankroll your music downloads!
You can also buy iTunes gift cards from retail outlets (according to their Web site), although I haven't seen these cards myself.

BearShare, their latest version is version 6, its all legal now...even the unlicensed songs (identified with a green disc) are legal to download. And version 6 has no spyware or any of that junk in it.
