Romania is a country in Southeastern Europe. It borders Hungary and Serbia to the west, Ukraine and Moldova to the northeast, and Bulgaria to the south. Romania has a stretch of sea coast along the Black Sea, and the eastern and southern Carpathian mountains run through its center.

Its a country in eastern Europe and like so many of the neighboring countries it has been overshadowed by the ebs and flows of the power struggles in history between Europe and Soviet Russia. When the USSR collapsed, many of these countries became visible on the map again.

Curiously enough Romanians speak a language that is part of the Romantic language group (French, Spanish, Portugese, Italian--based on Latin from the Romans). It is the only pocket of such a language in a sea of languages that belong to the Slavic group. English is a Germanic language.
