In Ejido Nuevo Campeche Mexico they cart around car gasoline in the two liter bottles they clean out after use to start their kitchen fires on the very hard wood of that region. It is even sold in the small town where there are not any gas stations in liter bottles because they sell gas by the liter which they buy then take back to town to sell for a little more profit. So they can be used to teach metric and comprehension of metric in regards to liters.
Not that I recommend it but I was very surprised to see someone stop after being in a town where he got gas then to stop again for a bottle of gas for his kitchen fires.
There are a variety of projects you can do with 2 liter bottles. They even have books for them. I recycle mine but I have seen beautiful wind mobiles made from them, airplanes, and the vortex whirl wind tornado bottles which are a mixture of colored water and vegetable oil. Sometimes they add particles to this mixture. Let me see if I can find the project book I believe they have one on Amazon.com. There is also a pop bottle science book available.
Terrariums where you put the dirt on one side then some moss or plant seeds and some water then close it up so the moisture stays in. Also it works good to show a water cycle for children to use a clear plastic bottle. You put sand in the bottom some water on top and then close the bottle then put it in the sun.
You can mix soda with baking soda, or vinegar shake it up and see it shoot out or add slowly to watch it blow up a baloon or pour over depending upon mixtures etc.

Soda Pop - Water - Juice Bottles
Trash to Treasures Crafts: Find many craft projects using bottles. A great way to recycle soda pop, water, and other bottles!

A search of the internet will give you many many ideas and probably even Yahoo Ask or Answers will give you many ideas because many of these questions I see are asked repetitively sometimes they are answered better than others so researching past questions here can be quite a revelation such that if I cannot find the answer anywhere else I look first in past questions answered.
Recycle the bottles. Ignore the rude comments they think are funny they may be dangerous or illegal. Never work with anything explosive because it can maim you or kill you. Only skilled experienced people should work with explosives. And just because a movie says that a pop bottle can silence a gun does not mean it can until you try it out and learn how to do it properly. It may be dangerous to try it out. So in case young ignorant curious people read this keep in mind some of the people here are very irresponsible to make comments like I have read.

spray paint them, makes a nice small flower vase for a child who loves picking flowers. also you can ( if you have children) take macaroni, dried and glue it to the bottles and have the children paint these add some glitter to it, and make presents for family members. also, you can make squirrel feeders with it, add peanut butter inside and nail to a tree, watch the squirrels go nuts over this. also, you can cut the tops off and used to store pens and pencils in it. you can also, wash out these pop bottles fill with water and freeze these. then you can have ice water anytime you like. or frozen bottles for your cooler. less mess of water, and whomever is thirsty and get a drink. fill with colored sand, add a few things in it as you would see in a desert, and glue the lid back on, shake it up and see what type of picture you can make. all kinds of projects can be thought of. have fun doing this, get ideas from the children in the neighborhood.

When I was a kid we used to make ghosts for halloween out of them. First we would cut the bottle in half and only use the bottom. We would then spray paint it white and draw in eyes and mouth. Then we would get white trash bags and slit them almost all the way up to the top to make a fringe and glue it to the open part of the bottom of the bottle. We would end up with a ton of these things and would hang them up everywhere for trick-o-treaters.

In addition to the projects below, Carol Duvall had a cute apple-shaped pencil holder on her show last week (probably Wednesday). You cut off the opaque plastic bottoms and glue two of them together. Punch small holes around the top to slide pencils into, spraypaint bright red and glue a small felt leaf to the top.

Yup, put vegetable oil in half, or a quarter. Then fill the rest with colored water, and put some food coloring in the water. Sprite bottles look cool doing this.
It demonstrates the diff weights of diff matter, and looks neat.
Then you can shake them up and watch the oil regather and such.

If they are colored - what my aunt does with them is line her driveway during the holidays.
She floats tea lights in them , cut a hole in the back side about two inches from the base. Set them in a line, put an inch of water in the bottom of the base and light the tea light.
She has bird feeders out the ears and this was one idea she used last year.

You could cut the tops off about a third of the way down and use them to store bits and bobs - I use mine for cotton reels and with them being see through I can easily find the colour I want

You can cut the bottom off and use it as a funnel or rinse the bottle out, peel off the label, place a decorative picture around it and use as a vase.
