I'm 21 years old and got my 1st period at age 17. and never really thought about it or worried about it until recently. because i heard there could be all these things and reasons why its irregular. i do get it every month though. i always just thought because im so tiny thats why its irregular. im about 5'5 and 100 lbs. ive been reading all this stuff and its starting to scare me. all these things that could be wrong with me and the possibility of not having any children in the future. i really dont know what to do. i really dont feel comfortable talking to my mom about these kind of things and definately wouldn't be able to tell my doctor. i guess im just shy about it. do you really think theres something wrong with me? or am i just freaking out over nothing!

I had irregular periods for years after I started my period. But, once I turned 18, my doctor said that I needed to get 3 or more periods per year, which I wasn't. My OBG-YN told me that it is normal for women to be irregular but we need to have at least 3 periods a year to flush out our lining.

If I were to guess, you are underweight, which could be a major factor in your irregular periods. Body fat aids in the production of estrogen. If a woman doesn't have enough body fat, her estrogen supply will diminish. If underweight, the body will not "endanger" itself by allowing itself to have to support another life, and therefore, shuts down the reproductive cycle.

That said,
When you read stuff, even our posts here on yahoo.answers, none of it should be used as a diagnostic tool. Only a doctor can do that. Of course your going to be scared if you start reading about all of the diseases and conditions related to irregular menstrual cycles. Don't be afraid to talk to your doctor, believe me, they have heard it all, and they aren't there to judge you. They aren't going to think your weird for asking. There are LOADS of women who have irregular periods and go to their doctors for help. For them it's just routine.

I hope at 21 you've been examined by a GYN.....what did she/he say about this?

You sound a bit underweight and this could be the problem.

I would seriously go back to the GYN with your concerns...it could be nothing but then again this could be the symptoms for something serious.

i think you're freaking out over nothing..but go to the doctor and tell them what's going on...it's the only way you'll feel better about it..i know you said that you wouldn't be comfortable doing that but go to a female doctor and get checked out...you'll have to just get over your fear..the doctor isn't going to laugh at you...they see this type of thing every day...
