No one wants there mom to help them find friends... especially at 16 yo... please take no offense ... he has to learn how be able to get out and mix it up on his own... encourage him to join some of the clubs or things like that at school... sports etc... shyness can be mistaken for a social anxiety disorder... you could take him to a doctor to make sure that's not his problem... there are support groups that may be available and they even have them for certain age groups and he might find friends ther ... and they will for sure have something in common...

Take him to church or something that would be "inviting". He's also 16 and guys usually go through a weird stage around then. Just keep an eye on him and be there if he needs to talk. Being "withdrawn" can also be a sign of something deeper. But don't push him, just be emotionally available.
