well that is a cool question.
You really have to compare by era to get meaninful statistics.
E.g. the Babe excelled in an era when pitchers went 9 innings every three games and threw about 70 mph tops, with not much cut on their pitches. He swung a 54 oz bat for christ sakes and a big fat guy - hardly like today's athletes.
Bonds, if not for the roids, would be way up there.
Griffey would've had a shot if he hadn't gotten cocky and selfish and then flat for a coupl eyars.
I think you'v egot to give Rose, Mantle, and Musial consideration.
However, if Pujols keeps up his pace for a few more years you have to think seriously about him - he's off to a better start for SIX years than anyone in history and he's in contention for gold glove. Now he's got a world series ring and is also a sentimental favorite (no roids, e.g.). Only deficiency is he's not that fast - not many steals like Mays and others.
For offense you've gotta look at total production - OBP, Slugging, walks, low strikeouts, sacrifices, runs scored, all those things.

Right now I do not believe there is one best right now, David Ortiz the best hitter the past couple of years is primarily a DH, Bonds is getting slow and all the steroid stuff takes him out the best hitter this year Mauer did not show much power, Morneau still needs a couple more years like he had Sheffield is old Jeter Is a possibility Edmonds and Larry Walker are getting old and slow so in the National League I would take Pujols American I would take Santana unless you are excluding pitchers then I would have to take Vlad Guerrero. Did not read the in history part sorry then it would have to be George Herman Ruth before him baseball was just that base to base sequential scoring lots of singles and errors full of corruption, not that he changed the corruption, but he breathed new life into a dying game after the White Sox 1919 scandal and many, many smaller scandals no matter how many home runs anyone hits Ruth change the game more than anyone.

This question always gets lotsa play.
Ruth was the greatest player ever. The only person who ranks with him as a hitter is Ted Williams, although others are lingering a shade below. But the fact Ruth was a dominant pitcher for 6 years or so before he became an everyday player has to be taken into account. At least that's my opinion. :-)

My opinion?? Pete Rose, Cincinnati Reds. (also the Phillies)
I am a Cardinals fan forever, and Albert Pujols will eventually out-do Rose, and other greats, but you asked "in history". But moreover, I am a fan of the Game of Baseball. Sooo, I would also add to any "GREATEST PLAYER" list:
Ted Williams, Red Sox
Brooks Robinson, Orioles
DiMaggio, Yanks
Rod Carew, Twins
Don Drysdale, Dodgers
Bob Gibson, Cardinals
ya see what I mean? The rich history of the grand ol' Game brings to mind so many individuals who were a real thrill to watch, and of course, there are plenty others.
But I will choose Charlie Hustle, Mr. Pete Rose, as 'best'.
Isn't Baseball just the very best game ever?

The Babe, try and imagine how many Home-runs he would hit in todays game with the poor quality of pitching there is today.Yes the pitchers were better way back when they threw complete games all the time, some even both games of a double-header.

The Babe. He could have been a greta pitcher but was too good of a hitter. He was also an ambassador after the BlackSox scandal in 1919.

in ancient history... bath ruth.
We do not live in the past so we can only hear about these "legends".
However, the game is played very differently these days. we can hardly compare with the 19/20th century.
CY won 500 plus games. do people get 500 starts these days?

Statistically, Babe Ruth, but there is no definite answer. Entire books are written about this...
