Burning DVD's is NOT illegal -- Burning COPYRIGHTED DVD's without PERMISSION is illegal. If the DVD is not copyrighted, or if you have permissio of the copyright owner it is not illegal. ALSO: without burners, you wouldn't be able to make backup/archive copies.
