Once, and feed sparingly. They do not eat much, and overfeeding will pollute your water and make him sick. :-)

once a day, if you feed it too much the water will change colors and soon after the fishy will be swimming upside down in the bowl. I'd highly suggest getting a largish clear glass vase, some pebbles, a peace lily, water purifying solution, and a gallon jug. you need to prepare the water first...follow the directions on the solution (which you can find in the fish (pet) department at Walmart). Put the pebbles in the bottom of the vase, fill with prepared water. Remove all potting soil from peace lily...includings its root. Get a small plastic container (the kind that go under potted plants, can be found in the gardening section of walmart) it needs to be big enough to snuggly fit into the top of the vase without completely falling in. Cut two slits in the bottom of the container, carefully push the peace lily roots through the slits. Put fish in water filled vase, put roots into vase and push the container into the top of the vase. The fish will naturally eat the roots of the peace lily...don't worry it won't kill the lily. Once a day feed the fish a pinch of tropical fish food (found in the fish (pet) department at walmart). No more than once a month clean the vase and pebbles. A good way to tell its time to clean the vase and pebbles is when the water gets cloudy.
another reason to have the peace lily...it makes it harder for cats to get to the fish if you have them.

The only fish you should feed more than once a day are babies, then you should feed them 3-4 times a day until they are fairly big.
Fish food companys would like you to feed all fish 3-4 times a day so they can sell more food to you...

The person who thought up the "betta in a vase" idea should be shut up in a box and fed shoelaces and bubble-wrap.
Bettas are carnivorous. In the wild, they eat small insects. The reason they won't harm the plant in one of those hideous "vases" is that they won't and in fact can't eat it. It takes at least a month for a betta to starve to death, and by the end of that time the fish owner blames some "strange fish disease" .... not the fact that they themselves condemned their fish to a slow death.
Contrary to the signs posted in Petco to try to reduce complaints by customers, bettas do not naturally live in a teacup full of water -- they live in rice paddies, ditches, shallow ponds, etc., with plenty of space to roam. (think about it: the amount of water in the typical betta container would evaporate in a couple of days of hot sun outdoors) Sure, they can live in tiny bowls if you keep the water clean. Change it every two days per cup of water -- so if you have a pint-sized bowl, you have to change the water every four days at least. Instead, look for a 1-gallon (or larger) goldfish bowl, or one of those nice little tanks with built-in filtration systems, etc. Many people are surprised to find that bettas are actually quite active fish, if they have some space. And they're much more beautiful if they are swimming around and displaying their beautiful fins than if they're sitting on the bottom of a tiny jar.
The rule of thumb for any fish is to feed them as much as they can eat in five minutes, once per day. The reason for not overfeeding fish is not that the fish will eat too much, but that uneaten food will remain in the water and decay, which will make the water unhealthy.
Remember, being cold-blooded creatures, fish do not need to burn food to warm up the universe. Therefore, with their slower metabolisms, they do not eat nearly as much as a mammal of that size (if you could imagine one) would. More people overfeed their fish than underfeed them.

DO NOT DO THE PEACE LILY THING! Betta fish are carnivorous. If you check their food supply it is mostly made out of protein (meat). Feed once to twice a day on store bought betta food - 2-3 pellets per feeding - and if you can supplement their diet with bloodworms if you want - they love it. Your Betta will eat the peace lily roots only out of desperation and will slowly starve to death. You can get Betta food at any pet store. Good luck! When in doubt, go to www.google.ca and type in key words on the topic you're looking for.

Only feed asmuch as your beta can eat so try feeding a pinch a day if it eats all of it then feed more or if it does not eat all of it feed less.
