Yes, I hand out candy for Halloween! My husband and I dress up, and decorate outside - turn on the porchlight, and start handing it out when the kids start ringing the bell. I usually like to hand out a small chocolate bar of some kind and a piece of wrapped gum. If the child is really, really young - I hand out suckers - so they won't choke. I usually hand out spider rings or bat rings or plastic bugs, too. I have been known run out (depending on how many candy bars my hubby and I eat too). When that happens I will hand out mini-bags of popping corn, Little Debbie Snack Cakes, lunchbox size bags of chips (Cheetos, potato chips, etc.) I have handed out fruit roll-ups and when I get really desperate - I will hand out the packages of snack crackers & peanut butter. But I usually have enough candy.
One year, I listened to the pediatrician, and handed out apples and raisins - and that went over like a lead balloon with the kids. That's when I decided - Halloween comes but once a year - go ahead and hand out chocolate!
This year the gum I got is called Blood Drops - it is black and when you bite into it it squirts red liquid. It stains your tongue black! It is fun!!
Happy Halloween!

Yes, I do! Love Halloween! I hand out candy because it is purely fun to see the little, and not so little, rascals all dressed up cute, and every kid deserves the chance to have this traditional fun and get a booty of candy to enjoy!
In our area, the wee ones start usually around 4:30 or so, so that's when I start handing out candy. It gets dark here around 5:30 - 6, so that's when the bulk of them start coming. Usually it's down to a trickle by 9.
The kind of candy - a variety, since it's nice to give out bits of everything. I have different stuff for little ones, and for the teens. I always have some chocolate, some suckers, assorted candies, some salty stuff like bags of chips or cheezies, some cool stuff like fizzy candies or gummy hot dogs or something, and I always have an alternative. This year I have sports-themed pencils and pens on a cord.
In our area, we get around 100 kids, so I try to judge the amount appropriately. If I ever were to run out (haven't yet), I can always get into my kids lunch stash and go for the fruit rollups or Scooby gummies, or something. No worries there - have plenty of things that I can give out.

Yes. Because it's so fun to see the little ones so excited and the older ones dressed in costumes and acting crazy. I'm ready (the lights on) between 5 and 5:30, but the big swarm doesn't start until right around 6:00 p.m. A wide variety--snack sizes of: chocolate, something like sweet-tarts and suckers. Usually 3 or 4 pieces per child. No, I've never run out of candy. I sometimes have to dip into the personal stash, though. Lights are turned out between 8:30 and 9:00 p.m.

I don't hand out candy because I think kids get enough of that on Halloween. So, I am handing out some really cool Halloween pencils (they are all sparkly and fun) that I bought in bulk from Wal-Mart and then also granola bars.
It depends on how big your neighborhood is and how many kids there are.
I would say about two bags should get you through the night if you give them one or two peices each. Possibly three bags, just to be sure, but you might have left-overs.
And there are usually set times for Trick-or-Treating, so check the community calendar for when kids will start coming (usually right after or an hour after school).
Have fun! :-)

Ok, I'm not looking for a best answer but thought I'd share my thoughts.
No I am not handing out candy. This year my wife and I are handing out Glowsticks. for the simple fact that there are so many kids that can't eat candy for what ever reason and the Idea of giving out tooth brushes just makes me cringe. as for the time that I start, that all depends on when the first kid knocks on my door. personaly I am hoping that they won't come until later in the evening ...and as for running out... I only bought 100 sticks so hopefully I won't run out to fast. especially because my 2 yr old wants a couple for herself. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

Usually we do hand out candy but not this year. We start whenever the kids start coming. We usually hand out whatever candy that is on sale. Usually giving each child 2-3 pieces and we usually run out of candy.

1) yes
2) because I remember what is was like to go trick-or-treating, and the disappointment when I came upon a house without candy
3)some kids come as early as 6:30. the lateset are usually at about 10:00
4)The mini-chocolate bars (peanut-free), lolipops, and those small, square caramels
5) I buy many, many bags so that I don't run out. If I have extra, I eigther donate it to a charity, or eat it myself
6)On the rare occasion that I run out of candy, I can always borrow some from a neigbour

No, I don't hand out candy on halloween. I have two kids myself so I am usually out with them so they can go trick or treating. My parents do hand out candy though...they start handing it out at the time trick or treating starts (usually 6pm around here) they buy snickers or milky way bars...usually two bags of each and they don't usually run out...but have very few left in the end

I do if I'm home, or my wife will. We get plenty of candy about 4 big bags and start off rationing it out then near the end of the night we let the kids grap as much as they want.

Buy lots. Kids are demanding, give out 2 to each kid. I do, because I love seeing the kids face light up. Start at 7:00 or 8:00-- be sure to turn your porch light on! I hand out little mini packs of M and M's or Gummi thingies.
