I almost always like the book better than the movie. Sometimes, watching the movie gets me interested in the book, and then I find out what a great book it is. For example, I read "Fellowship of the Ring" as an assignment when I was in ninth grade, and didn't care for it much, mostly because we were being forced to read it at a really fast pace and it's kind of a hard book to read fast. Then I saw the movie and thought, "This is a whole lot cooler than I remember the book being..." So I reread the book and realized how much I'd missed the first time I read it. Now the LOTR books are some of my favorites. Watching the movie is a good way to get the general plot of the book if you're not a great reader (I know people who aren't very good readers, but when they can see it happening in front of them can understand what's going on), or are not sure you'll like the book (take 2 hours to watch the movie vs. 2 weeks to read the book or whatever...)

Usually the book. There's time for more detail, back story, exposition, exploration of the characters' thought processes, etc. However I can think of two movies I enjoyed more. One was
Rosemary's Baby which I thought was scarier as movie. The other was the African Queen. Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn brought the characters to life. I was surprised when I read the book how lifeless the characters were compared to the ones I had seen on the screen.

I depends on how true to the book the movie maker is. I enjoyed the LOTR movies because the filmmaker was very true to the books. (which I had read long before the movies came out) I think in that case the movies enhanced the books for me. I also liked the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. It is also quite true to the book.
I enjoy both the books and their movies as long as the filmmaker is true to the story.

Always the book because a movie usually can't convey well what a character is feeling and/or thinking about in key situations or circumstances. The movie makers try hard but there is just so much you can do and just so much time and money.

Always the book - they have so much more detail that can't be conveyed on screeen. In particular, what characters are thinking - that always helps you to get to know them better, but it just can't be done with a movie.
