An African ball python is a good choise as well as a Columbian red tail boa, if you have never owned a snake before. And if you don't plan on owning any other snakes or know how to seperate them and keep them apart, King snakes are fun too! Pythons are the laziest and most easy going but don't always hang on too well, Boas are very curious and hang on very tightly, and King snakes love to move about and twist their bodys around. (And even love to go along for the ride when you take a walk!)

Pet Constrictor Snakes

"where as Rosy Boas and Redtailed boas get closer to fifteen and twentyfeet "

Uhh... Rosy Boas only get 2 - 3 feet long and are actually one of the best beginner snakes a person can get. Here is a site with some good information about them:
http://www.rosyboas.com/

I wouldn't recommend Boa constrictor imperator as a first-time snake, due to their potential size (I've seen many that were about 12 feet long). Some of the smaller subspecies are good, but they tend to be a lot harder to find and therefore more expensive.

Generally, if you want a boa or python as a first time pet, your best choices are Rosy Boas, Rubber Boas, Kenyan Sand Boas, Children's Pythons or Ball Pythons. All of these species are generally docile as well as easy to care for.

Ball Pythons are one of the most popular, and only get about six feet long where as Rosy Boas and Redtailed boas get closer to fifteen and twentyfeet (not sure of the exact length, but extremely less managable size)

Cornsnakes are not nessicarily a "boa constricter" but they do kill and eat their food with the same method of constricting and tend to be a more slender snake (still nearly six feet, but a Ball python is a much thicker snake) and don't get beyond a size of eating maybe decent sized rats, where Ball pythons get to the point where they need rabbits.....so make sure you can handle whatever your snake needs to eat (and no, they won't live on bugs ;-P). Also, remember that snakes have a long life span, and they will grow, and you'll need space to keep them through their whole life, not just when they're a foot long. (for this reason, I wouldn't recomend the bermese pythons, redtail or rosy boas)

One downside to Ball pythons though, is that they can be a little notorious for deciding that they simply aren't going to eat (usually when they're small, fresh from the breeding farm/petstore etc) and they'll starve themselves to death without intervention (force-feeding etc) However, this is not a common enough problem to dent their popularity, but it is something to be aware of.

The ball python is the easiest pet only growing to be about 4 ft on average. The central american boa is another great one only getting 5 to 6 feet. They may be a slight more expensive but seem to take food better. Boas in general are just a lot more personable and seem to have a personality compared to the python.

Before just deciding you want a constrictor, realize what you're going to have to go through: feeding (live, prekilled, or frozen ANIMALS), care (handling and taming), housing (eg: a Red-Tail boa will get to be 6-8 feet.... can you say spare bathroom?), and VET BILLS. Not to mention FINDING a vet that knows about snakes.

Personally, I love rosy boas. They get 4 feet long (maximum) and are very friendly and relaxed.

Well, all I've ever owned is a Ball Python. I've never had any problems with him before. He is 4 foot long and eats medium sized rats.
