For many reasons. It is the pinnacle of our sport on a truly global level. We get to support our countries and nothing brings out our national pride more. One of the things I love so much is watching the improvement of or performances of the "underdog teams and nations". They work so hard and often at such disadvantage. You cannot help but admire their achievements and ride their wave of success with them. Being from a nation not specifically renowned for football, it gives me the opportunity to see the best of the best and appreciate the enormity of the sport and the talent that we are privileged to witness. Great stuff.

Only happens once every four years, the world cup was supposed to the battle of the best. It is a showcase and a clash of football styles - South American vs. European, and recently African.
We do not get to see this type of matched often. The exhibition games could not do the trick because they do not mean much.
The world cup used to mean more in the past: the recent gambling activities are eroding the integrity of the game which is sad.

Very good question. Lets see, why is the World Cup important to me? Simply put, FOOTBALL is my PASSION. And the WC has just gotten sweeter for me as my homecountry Trinidad & Tobago qualified for the first time for WC 2006. The WC is the rare chance to see players from our favourite clubs battle it out in a country setting. Seeing clubmates play against each other is almost poetic, seeing the comradery on the feild makes you realise why this is the most loved sport in the world, yeah of course there's the incidental 'badplay', but it all makes up the game we all love...our PASSION, our FOOTBALL....

Because it is the best soccer around.
Unfortunately, it also has the best acting in it as well.
You also get countries like England who play really badly so they can discredit the whole series.
