you can put crumpled old newspapers inside every shoe or make newspaper wallpaper for the closet = the type of material used for newspapres absorbs odor ... you can also use charcoal - you can put it in an open jar, then put in each corner of the closet.. that works! I put some in my fridge... i hate cleaning always..
....especially, for LEATHER SHOES,, i hate the odor but its not advisable to wash leather shoes .. it cracks.. so i apply this principle

1. Remove the shoes.
2. Clean out the closet (again).
3. Spray an antibacterial air cleaner (like Oust) in the closet.
4. Wash every pair of shoes -- I mean, c'mon, if the shoes are stinking up the closet, clean 'em already.
5. Whoever keeps their shoes in that closet should also wash their feet once in a while, and think about using a foot spray.
6. Put Odor Eaters in the shoes, or a similar odor-eliminating insert, and change them as directed on the package.
Good luck.

get some damp-rid at the walmart and put it in the closet (it comes in a sort of can that you open the top and remove the plastic and it works very well .. the smell is because of the dampness in the air combined with shoes covered with body oils and sweat from feet combined with body heat inside the shoes which causes bacteria to grow and cause odor ... or you could spray the inside of the shoes with a shoe deodorizer..several on the market .. especially for sneakers or work boots

use some type of enzyme cleaner, like for cat pee, (you can try washing the shoes in vinegar too), get some new shoes...What you really need to do is buy whom ever has the smell shoe two new pairs of sneakers(so they can rotate them every other day and allow the sweat dry out of them). They need to be dried out in the sun or outside, not put in a dark place when stinky stuff will grow.

Spray the shoes with fabreez to help with the smell. Then buy a bag of coffee beans, open it, and leave it sitting in there. The coffee beans will soak up the smell into the beans. Or/and you could buy the air freshener balls that go into your shoes

the newspaper works for me, my son ran track in high school in Oregon, he was always coming home with wet running shoes, crumpled newspaper stuffed in the shoe and left overnight drys them and leaves them odor free. I tried it on dry shoes for the oder and it worked. You may need to change it several times before the odor is gone.

Some places sell things that you can insert in your shoes. They are like air freshener things. Or you can buy those air fresheners that stick to the wall. Put a few up.

Put some pans of dry baking soda in there. It will absorb odors. You could even sprinkle a little in smelly shoes.
